Developing an Eye

A NOTE FROM KAREN

Welcome to Field Notes from Karen Boyer Art Advisory. After 16 years as Elements in Play, I've given my business my name and launched a new website. Same me, same expertise, with a new look that better reflects the advisory I've built.

THE ONE THING

Develop your eye, find what you love

This summer I saw art in LA, San Francisco, the Hamptons, NYC and Madrid, from museum and gallery exhibitions to artists' studios and private spaces. Some works really stayed with me, but all of them reminded me how important it is just to look.

A good art advisor can give you access, provide context, and help you understand quality, pricing, and the market. But knowing what you respond to comes from spending time with art and paying attention to your reactions: not just what you want to see again, but also what you don't.

Over time, those reactions become your eye. And the more you can trust it, the more personal the art you live with becomes.

FROM THE FIELD

John Chamberlain, Shelter Island

A rare visit to John Chamberlain's studio and estate on Shelter Island, which are not open to the public. An incredible place to experience his work in the setting where he created it.

Teresa Solar Abboud, Madrid

A great studio visit with Teresa Solar Abboud in Madrid at an exciting point in her career. Her first UK solo exhibition just opened at Lehmann Maupin in London on September 10.

ON THE RADAR

Gordon Parks at Jack Shainman, New York

I had a sneak peek at part of the upcoming exhibition, including this wonderful 1966 photograph of Muhammad Ali in Miami. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the show, opening September 18, by an artist whose work feels as important as ever.

The Armory Show, New York

September 24–27 at the Javits Center. I'll be taking clients through the fair, one of my favorite ways to see a lot of art together and discover works we might not otherwise come across.

WHERE I'LL BE

September 24–27 · The Armory Show, New York
October 14–18 · Frieze London
October 20–25 · Art Basel Paris
December 2–6 · Art Basel Miami Beach
